Denali Wonder

January 18, 2017 by alaskanraven

I saw Denali from the shore of Wonder Lake at 6:30 pm. It was a long day on the winding road peering down canyons and scanning the landscape for animals. Seeing this view made the day perfect. I noticed a backpacker by the waters edge. Both of us were mesmerized by the mountain.
A monolith of ice and snow towering over deep deep blue waters.
Awesome beauty and wonder.

Water Song

January 18, 2017 by alaskanraven

Graceful feathers skim the surface. Effortlessly gliding. Swans capture my attention. What is it about these beautiful birds that catch our breath and calms us in this hectic world?
Orange rays of evening sun color their feathers as this pair floats together in the ponds at Creamers Field.

A Poet’s Homestead

He built the cabin on his homestead in 1947. Lived off the land. Trapped. Survived harsh winters. He was trained as an artist and planned to paint in Alaska but his paints froze so he ‘drew’ with words instead. Prose and poetry earned him awards. Fellowships. National recognition. My friend and I hike around his […]

more about Raven

I ventured to Alaska before there was an oil pipeline and fell in love with the gnarly spruce trees, intense weather and mountains I could touch. Very different from the landscape in St. Louis. I was looking for different. The spruce trees: those scraggy, wizened, lanky conifers danced onto the first page of my sketch […]
