Cozy Ice Cave

February 4, 2017 by alaskanraven

“Cozy Ice Cave”
40″ x 30″     3000.

Who would have thought ice could make a cozy place to sleep? All that fur and muscle and power contained and at rest.

She is half asleep. Eyelids doing pushups.
Each muscle releases.
She floats
above her arctic nest.
Adrift in furry warmth,
a secret cave of ice and snow.
Ocean salty aromas promise refreshment
but she is no longer listening.

Arctic blue shimmers with purple against golden orange.
Snow and ice surround him but he glistens with color of sun and his own body heat.
Large bold brushstrokes speak of his strength of purpose.

$600.

I stare at a skyscraper wall of ice from behind my easel.
Mendenhall Glacier taunts me.
A chunk of ice calves revealing a scar of brilliant color. I search for the right color and splash cobalt teal on the hungry watercolor paper.
The steel cold water is formidable.

What is that movement? My binoculars find a canoe sailing full of brave souls.
Perfect! NOW I can help you see just how large that glacier really is.
My paper can only hold a a small piece of the thundering monolith.

This painting received 1st place the next day in the Great Alaskan Plein Air Retreat competition. It gave me new brushes, new frames and cash.
But the best part is the priceless memory of painting
near the shadow of this glorious glacier
on the solstice in Juneau, Alaska.

Raven Ramblings

Shipment arrives

“Sterling, look at that!” “Look at what, Felix?” “That huge box. From Canada.” “Looks like the artist received another shipment of Kroma paint. Watch, she’ll spend the rest of the day arranging it in her studio. All those tubes of paint go in some sort of order.” “Paint? What is that?” “Paint is color. She […]

Edges are important

“Sterling, What is the artist doing now?” “What do you mean, Felix?” “She spends lots of time brushing paint on the sides of her painting. The edges. You know what I mean?” “She makes changes on it when she changes the front of the painting. The sides appear to be important to her.” “But why?” […]

more about Raven

I ventured to Alaska before there was an oil pipeline and fell in love with the gnarly spruce trees, intense weather and mountains I could touch. Very different from the landscape in St. Louis. I was looking for different. The spruce trees: those scraggy, wizened, lanky conifers danced onto the first page of my sketch […]
