Polar Energy

Electric color bristles off of this bear. Oranges, blues, teal tingle and tease each other. She traveled a great distance when purchased as a surprise present for my Ravenista’s husband. This bears den is over the couch in the family room. The most ‘used’ room in the house. She energizes their home and her family energizes her.

Chairman of the Board

Chairman of the Board
18″ x 24″
sold
This bear emerged out of the pigment and announced he was done. The falconer walked in the room and proclaimed, “Well, it is the Chairman of the Board!” And so it is. He guards his home with dignity. Chosen by the Ravenista to greet all who enter.

Feathers

“Feathers”
24″ x 18″
sold
Sandhill cranes bring the midnight sun to the interior of Alaska. Their arrival is a celebration of summer. Prehistoric feathers strut around the field demand my attention. I stare at their yoga moves with admiration. How can they stand on one leg and bury their head in feathers to take a nap? I paint the majesty of her feathers while she hunts for bugs. Summer color surrounds us. Her feathers are protected and cherished in my Ravenista’s new home in Anchorage.

She sails over the snow. This bear might even be flying. Or is she diving into the sea? Featherly fur lit up by sun. The falconer calls her ‘Angel’. But I call her ‘Promise’ because the bright sunshine and color reminds me of the promise of spring. She flew to her new home and is content.

Shipment arrives

“Sterling, look at that!” “Look at what, Felix?” “That huge box. From Canada.” “Looks like the artist received another shipment of Kroma paint. Watch, she’ll spend the rest of the day arranging it in her studio. All those tubes of paint go in some sort of order.” “Paint? What is that?” “Paint is color. She […]

Edges are important

“Sterling, What is the artist doing now?” “What do you mean, Felix?” “She spends lots of time brushing paint on the sides of her painting. The edges. You know what I mean?” “She makes changes on it when she changes the front of the painting. The sides appear to be important to her.” “But why?” […]

more about Raven

I ventured to Alaska before there was an oil pipeline and fell in love with the gnarly spruce trees, intense weather and mountains I could touch. Very different from the landscape in St. Louis. I was looking for different. The spruce trees: those scraggy, wizened, lanky conifers danced onto the first page of my sketch […]
