What is she staring at?

January 29, 2018 by Raven

“Sterling, I have a question for you.”

“What is it, Felix?”

“The artist is at the window. What is she staring at? Nothing is moving out here.”

“She is studying the colors in the sky. Humans call it sunset. I have no idea why it fascinates them so much.”

“How useless. You can’t eat it. “

“No, you can’t. Is that all you think about? Get some culture. Maybe she will make a painting.”

“Food is important. I’m hungry. All of the time.”

“Felix, I have an idea. Fly over there and pose in that tree.”

“What? Why?”

“She might make you famous.”

“It’s gone! It’s gone!”

“What is it, Felix? What’s gone?”

“Sterling. My favorite painting. It’s gone!”

“What painting?”

“That painting of the big rock and the raven. I like to think it’s a picture of me. It illuminates my feathers a little. Just the edges, real nice.”

“It’s not all about you Felix. Do you know what the Big Rock is called?”

“Big Rock sounds like a good name to me. No. What?”

“Denali. The great one. It’s higher than even you can fly. You would pass out and freeze to death if you tried to fly over that one.”

“Oh. She should paint brighter light on me. Where did it go?”

“That painting belongs to one of her Ravenista’s now.”

“Raven—ista, what? What is that?”

“Ravenista’s are her collectors. They buy her paintings and put them on their walls. That’s what it’s all about, Felix. Sharing. The artist loves to share what she sees with others. It’s her connection.”

“Connection?”

“Yes, connection. She shares her love of paint and color and life. Sharing is a connection. It’s more than a caw and boing.”

Felix is a showboat

January 20, 2018 by Raven

“Sterling, I have a question for you.”

“What is it, Felix?”

“Guess what I can do?”

“No idea. You found a Synthetic?”

“No, This is better.”

“Ok. what?”

“I can make the artist come outside.”

“Yeah, right.”

“No. Watch. I’m going to stand on top of that big spruce.”

“I’m watching.”

“Caw, Caw, Caw, Caw, Caw….Boing, Boing, Boing, Boing, Boing. Caw, Caw. Here she comes, Sterling. She’s coming to the door. Caw, Caw, Caw Caw.”

“Ok, you win. What a show off.”

Motion and emotion

January 19, 2018 by Raven

“Sterling, I have a question for you.”

“What is it, Felix?”

“Why do you think the artist paints like that? Splashes of color. Wild brushstrokes.”

“Hmmmmm.”

“She keeps covering the paint with different colors. Layers and layers of color. She even goes in and scratches in it and wipes it off again.”

“You watch her that much?”

“Yeah, It makes me dizzy. I get tired just watching all that craziness.”

“I think she is catching movement. Motion. And emotion. Hey, I like that. Motion and emotion. Emotion and motion. I am brilliant.”

“Yeah, right.”

Felix is insulted

January 18, 2018 by Raven

“Sterling, I have a question for you.”

“What is it, Felix?”

“What is a proboscis?”

“Whoa, that is a pretty big word for you. Where did you get that mouthful?

“Herald”

“Herald?”

“Yes, he told me I have a big proboscis. And he laughed. I think I’m insulted but not sure yet.”

“Well, you do have a big proboscis. Herald was right. It’s your beak, doofus. But wait, don’t pout. Here’s what you can go do. Go back and tell Herald…”

Shipment arrives

“Sterling, look at that!” “Look at what, Felix?” “That huge box. From Canada.” “Looks like the artist received another shipment of Kroma paint. Watch, she’ll spend the rest of the day arranging it in her studio. All those tubes of paint go in some sort of order.” “Paint? What is that?” “Paint is color. She […]

Edges are important

“Sterling, What is the artist doing now?” “What do you mean, Felix?” “She spends lots of time brushing paint on the sides of her painting. The edges. You know what I mean?” “She makes changes on it when she changes the front of the painting. The sides appear to be important to her.” “But why?” […]

more about Raven

I ventured to Alaska before there was an oil pipeline and fell in love with the gnarly spruce trees, intense weather and mountains I could touch. Very different from the landscape in St. Louis. I was looking for different. The spruce trees: those scraggy, wizened, lanky conifers danced onto the first page of my sketch […]
